‘It’s Going To Be Hard To Break’: The Raiders’ Historic Loss Streak
The Las Vegas Raiders’ historic 13-game losing streak has come to an end, but the organization still has a long way to go to break the NFL record for the longest losing streak.
A Tough Start
The Raiders’ losing streak began in Week 1 of the 2021 season, when they fell to the Baltimore Ravens 33-27. They would go on to lose their next 12 games, including a 32-13 defeat to the rival Denver Broncos in Week 18.
“It was a tough year,” Raiders coach Josh McDaniels said after the team’s Week 18 loss. “We didn’t win as many games as we wanted to, but we learned a lot. We’re going to use this experience to build a better team next year.”
The NFL Record
The Raiders’ 13-game losing streak is the longest in franchise history. However, it is still well short of the NFL record for the longest losing streak, which is held by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers lost 26 games in a row from 1976 to 1977.
“It’s going to be hard to break that record,” said NFL historian John Clayton. “The Raiders would have to lose 14 games in a row to tie it, and that’s a lot of games to lose in a single season.”
Looking Ahead
The Raiders are hoping to put their losing ways behind them in 2023. They have a new coaching staff led by McDaniels, and they have made some significant changes to their roster.
“We’re excited about the future,” Raiders owner Mark Davis said. “We have a lot of young talent on this team, and we think we can be competitive next year.”
