Former NFL tight end Todd Becht has been named the Offensive Coordinator for Illinois State University (ISU). Becht brings a wealth of experience as both a player and coach to the Redbirds.
Becht played 12 seasons in the NFL, primarily with the St. Louis Rams. He was a key contributor to the Rams’ Super Bowl victory in 2000. Becht was known for his size (6’5″, 260 lbs), athleticism, and sure hands.
Becht transitioned to coaching after his playing career. He served as the Tight Ends Coach for the Buffalo Bills from 2017-2022. Under Becht’s guidance, the Bills’ tight end position saw significant improvement, with players like Dawson Knox and Tommy Sweeney emerging as reliable pass-catching threats.
Becht’s offensive philosophy emphasizes versatility and balance. He adapts his playcalling to the strengths and weaknesses of his team and opponents. Becht has shown a willingness to utilize multiple formations, including 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR) and 12 personnel (2 RBs, 2 TEs, 1 WR).
The Redbirds are hoping that Becht’s experience and expertise can help them improve their offensive output. In 2022, ISU ranked 11th in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in both scoring and total offense.
“Todd is a proven coach with a deep understanding of the offensive game. His experience as both a player and coach will be invaluable to our program. We’re excited to see what he can do with our offense.”
Becht’s arrival could have a major impact on ISU’s offense. His versatility and player development skills should help the Redbirds become more explosive and efficient. The Redbirds’ success in 2023 and beyond will depend on Becht’s ability to implement his system and get the most out of his players.
