In the wake of devastating firestorms that ravaged Los Angeles earlier this month, Governor Gavin Newsom welcomed President Trump to the tarmac at Los Angeles International Airport on a visit to survey the damage. Governor Newsom emphasized areas of collaboration and coordination with the federal government, urging President Trump to support recovery and rebuilding efforts in the affected communities.
Deployment of Crews to Protect Against Mudslides
As heavy rains are expected over the weekend, California has deployed crews across the region to protect against potential mudslides. The state has prepositioned flood resources and conducted educational outreach to local communities. The California Conservation Corps and California National Guard service members are actively working to implement physical barriers and bolster flood defenses.
Support for Recovery and Protection of Survivors
Governor Newsom has issued several executive orders to aid in rebuilding and recovery, create temporary housing, and safeguard survivors from exploitation and price gouging. These orders include tax relief, streamlining the rebuilding process, and suspending penalties and interest on late property tax payments.
Streamlining Rebuilding and Protecting Tenants and Homeowners
To expedite reconstruction, Governor Newsom has suspended permitting and review requirements under CEQA and the California Coastal Act. Additionally, he has made it easier to construct accessory dwelling units and allow for more temporary housing. Governor Newsom has also prohibited landlords in Los Angeles County from evicting tenants who share their rental units with firestorm survivors.
Mobilization of Debris Removal and Cleanup
The Governor has directed fast action on debris removal and mitigation of mudslides and flooding. Federal hazmat crews have been authorized to begin cleanup, and resources are being allocated to bolster flood defenses and stabilize hillsides in affected areas.
Safeguarding Survivors from Price Gouging
Governor Newsom has expanded restrictions to protect survivors from illegal price hikes on rent, hotel and motel costs, and building materials or construction. Individuals who encounter price gouging are encouraged to report violations to the Office of the Attorney General.
Immediate State Relief and Support
Governor Newsom has signed legislation providing over $2.5 billion to support ongoing emergency response and recovery efforts. The state has also established a hub of information and resources at CA.gov/LAfires and bolstered in-person Disaster Recovery Centers.
